YA Sneak Previews! June 6, 2009

Filed under: New Books,Young Adult — kidsbookcorner @ 11:25 pm

I just finished reading two amazing books and I just couldn’t wait to tell you about them! They don’t come out for a few months, but put them on your wish list because you simply must read them.

by Maggie Stiefvater

(Scholastic, hardcover, $17.99)

Available August 1, 2009

Twilight fan that I am, I was eager to read Shiver, a book many fellow YA enthusiast booksellers have praised as the next big thing.

I absolutely loved it. Shiver is the closest a new book has come to quenching the thirst of a Twilight fanatic, and it does so without feeling copycat-ish.

The story centers around Grace, a girl with a very special connection to the wolves that watch her from the woods outside her house. One night, one of these wolves shows up on her deck, only he’s not a wolf anymore, he’s a man. Grace and her wolf are soulmates (their romance fulfills the Bella-Jacob fantasy of Twilight fans) and I loved every minute of their story.

I have since handed this book to three of my staff members (and my mom), and so far everyone has loved it. It’s certainly a one or two sitting read, and I’m thrilled to report that it is the first in a series.

Visit Maggie Stiefvater’s website to watch the book trailer. While you’re there, check out that huge list of countries that will be publishing the book!

Catching Fire

by Suzanne Collins

(Scholastic, hardcover, $17.99)

Available September 1, 2009

I just finished reading this book this afternoon. Oh my gosh, it was fantastic.

First, let me say if you haven’t read The Hunger Games yet, you need to. Right now. Seriously. Step away from the computer and go down to your local library or indie bookstore and get a copy. You will thank me for this advice.

So, Catching Fire is the second book of the Hunger Games trilogy. I won’t give you a plot summary because I don’t want to spoil anything, but I will say that it totally measures up to the first book and had such a cliffhanger ending that I might just die waiting for the third book to come out next year.
