by Rebecca Stead
(Wendy Lamb Books, hardcover)
This weekend I had the pleasure of reading one of the most wonderful middle grade novels I have read this year. Rebecca Stead’s When You Reach Me is a very special book. Sixth-grader Miranda lives in New York City with her mom. She deals with regular kid issues, notably the disintegration of a longtime friendship. Then one day she starts to find these notes – mysterious messages from an unknown writer who seems to know what is going to happen to her in the future.
Woven into the story are references to Madeline L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time. Stead has done a glorious job with this book, and I ask that you put it in the hands of your favorite young reader.
